Remember:

/ɪ/ is the vowel sound in ship, fit, sit, rich and chip.

/i:/ is the vowel sound in sheep, feet, seat, reach and cheap.

The important difference is not simply that one sound is "short" and the other "long". The vowels are also different in quality: /ɪ/ is a different vowel from /i:/.
