Neighbourhood Disputes

Vocabulary: Find the "odd one out"

There may be more than one answer. Give your reasons.

1. Choose the odd one out.
Possible answer: argument. A dispute and a disagreement both describe a conflict or difference of opinion. An argument can mean a disagreement, but it can also mean a reason or case put forward in support of a view, giving it an additional meaning.
2. Choose the odd one out.
Possible answer: recycling. Dumping and fly-tipping refer to getting rid of waste, especially improperly. Recycling means processing waste materials so that they can be used again.
3. Choose the odd one out.
Possible answer: loud music. Noise nuisance and disturbance are broader terms for unwanted noise or disruption. Loud music is a specific possible cause of noise nuisance or disturbance.
4. Choose the odd one out.
Possible answer: pavement parking. Double parking and illegal parking can describe parking that breaches parking rules, while pavement parking specifically means parking on or partly on a pavement. However, pavement parking can also be illegal depending on the circumstances and location.
5. Choose the odd one out.
Possible answer: sensitive. Sensible and wise describe good judgement or practical behaviour. Sensitive usually means aware of or responsive to other people's feelings or circumstances, rather than necessarily showing good judgement.
6. Choose the odd one out.
Possible answer: antisocial. Inconsiderate and thoughtless both describe behaviour that fails to take other people's needs or feelings into account. Antisocial is broader and can describe behaviour that causes harm, annoyance or distress to other people or society.
7. Choose the odd one out.
Possible answer: smoke free zone. A no smoking area and a smoke-free zone refer to places where smoking is prohibited. A smoke control area is a different type of environmental regulation concerning the burning of certain fuels and emissions.
