ANSWER KEY

What is the purpose of the themed crosswords and when do you use them?

The themed crosswords incorporate the core vocabulary for each topic and can be used either at the end of the scheme of work to consolidate vocabulary or set as homework before the open discussion takes place to whet the appetite for exchanging views. Many crossword clues are definitions of words so this is a way of checking that students can define the vocabulary terms and know both synonyms and antonyms.

Both Prepare for Discussion and Extend Your Discussion measure letter size 8.5"x11" (22x28cm) so the crossword grids and answer keys are a good deal larger and higher resolution than those produced on this page.

If you want to create your own themed crosswords, the software I have used is called Crossword Construction Kit, though it is only available for PCs using the Windows Operating System. If you want to make interactive crosswords (i.e. self-correcting) for use in Internet browsers, then I recommend a program called JCross which is free to download and part of the Hot Potatoes suite also operating under Windows.

Creating crosswords involves a lot of work. I have checked thoroughly that all my spellings use British English and have tried and tested the 42 crosswords covered by my two discussion books. Most of them will appeal to more advanced students who like a challenge. The blank grids and clues are produced on facing pages, so only when you turn the page will you see the answer key.
