CONTENT SPECIFICATION

The placement instrument is a completion test set on an incline of difficulty. The content in each band of the test includes items of vocabulary and grammar encountered in our language syllabuses as well as things which students may need to know and say on their first day at the ELC.

BAND [A]

Tea/coffee language
Concrete referents
Nationality language
Present Continuous & Simple + easy prepositions [to/with/in/from]
Useful lexis [come/learn/stay/want/know/drink/prefer/live/leave/walk]
Useful language to help low level students order a snack / say how they like their tea or coffee / introduce themselves to students of other nationalities.

BAND [B]

More abstract but useful lexis [first/right/answer (n) ]
Dialogue: ["How long have you been learning English?" ]
Present Perfect Continuous (high frequency use)
Preposition + TIME ["for" v "since"]
Useful language to explain the purpose of the test and to help students talk about their English.

BAND [C]

Present Simple (Passive Voice) [are also given]
Common Verb taking Gerund [enjoy going to]
Adjective + particle [interested in]
Noun + particle [60 miles away]
Lexis: Collective nouns [a good selection/range of]
[Collocation: given. . . information]
[Collocation: interested . . . . .in]
[Collocation: Subject + Verb: trains complete the journey in]
